Haiku Poem | SLJ

Today I did a haiku poem for the Summer Learning Journey.

A haiku poem has three sentences and each sentence has syllables. The first sentence has five syllables and the second sentence has seven syllables and the last sentence has 5 syllables.

My poem was about waves, first I got an image of a wave and put that on the draw then though about my sentences so that first sentence would have 5 syllables and the second sentence would have 7 syllables and the last sentence would have 5 syllables.

I enjoyed this because I had a lot of creativity of what to do and it was fun doing my first haiku poem.

Rise Up

Today I did the Rise up activity Summer Learning Journey.

For this activity you make your own chores. I chorus to write about flowers.

First i deleted the original image and put in an image that goes with my chorus. Then I though for a while about what chorus I should write. After a while I made up eight chorus.

I really enjoyed doing this because I though that it was really fun to make up my own chorus

Kowhaiwhai | Step up

Today I did the  Kowhaiwhai  pattern but the step.

First I made a copy and used the two deigns and rotated them and made a different pattern and made some hearts with the korus.

I really enjoyed using the two deigns instead of one because it makes it look more detailed and i had more ideas of what to do. For some of the deigns I made them facing each other and some opposite of each other.

I really enjoyed doing the step up because I got to use two different deigns.

Commanding Conversation

Commanding Conversation is a can do for writing.

You write a short story that's about 3 or 4 sentences using an image to write about.

I used two images to write two conversations. The first one was about two girls going to the movies and the second one I did was about 1 kid being mean to another and the third kid telling the mean girl to stop.

This was fun because I really enjoyed writing conversations with the pictures and I got to learn more about how to use punctuation.

Kapa Haka performance

Today we had a  performance on our school stage.

When the performance group  came through the door they played a putara for their entrance ceremony. The performance group did different maori dances which used ti rakau, poi, taiaha.

Next they explained how to use them and what they were for.

They also performed a haka for the school, then the kapa haka boys also performed a haka for the people and the parents who came.

At the end we played a game called Maui and matou. Maui means left and matou means right. To play this game you have to have a stick and when someone says Maui you let go of your stick and go to the other one near you and it is the same for matou.

Touch Rugby

We carried on with three man settles and two man settles and played touch rugby from the previous week.

First we practiced two and three man settles to get ready for a game of touch.  Couch Mark told us to aim for one person when we drive the ball town the field.

Next we played a game of touch. The game was for learning how to play and how to use a two and three man settle.

I did well at two man settles and three man settles, and I had an amazing time playing touch rugby.

Fractions, decimals, percentages

Fractions are equal parts of a whole, percentages are is a number or ratio that uses a fraction of 100, and decimals is a number that is less than one.

Fractions are equal parts of a whole. It uses the numerator and the denominator. The numerator explains how many parts it has. The denominator shows how many equal parts it was divided into.

Percentages is a number of a fractions of 100 of a whole. it can be written with decimals and fractions. To write a percentage as a decimal divide by 100.

A decimal is a number that can be defined as a number of a whole. Digits following the decimal point shows a value smaller than one.

Shelter Materials

Different types of shelters can keep people safe by using the correct materials depending on what disaster they are being protected from.

When building a shelter, measuring the amount of materials being used is important so it keeps it balanced.

An example of materials used for a tsunami shelter are concrete, chicken wire, metal ties, aluminum, popsicle sticks, steel door, and hard clear plastic.

Using chicken wire is good for putting in the concrete so it can connect it to the other sides.

Hard clear plastic can be used for the windows because it doesn’t break easily like glass and because it's transparent which allows people to see what's happening on the outside.

Popsicle sticks are good for supporting the force of the impact. This material can also be used to anchor the shelter into the ground so it doesn’t tip over. The properties of wood are the shape that has been made.

Not every material can support every natural disaster. Different types of shelters can keep people safe by using the correct materials depending on what disaster they are being protected from.

Touch Rugby | Kiwi Sport

This week for kiwi sport we played touch, doing the 2 man settle and the 3 man settle.

We had 2 groups which one team was a defender and the second team were attackers, first we did the 2 man settle then the 3 man settle.

To do the 2 man settle you plant the ball then go over the ball so that their partner can pick it up and pass it to the person that planted the ball.

To do a 3 man settle there is 3 people and someone plants the ball and the other person picks it up and passes it to the third person.

Statistics | Maths

This week for maths my partner and I did averages scores from athletics day.

We used data and added it up with google sheets, we used addition/multiplication for example, 5+5+3+6+8=27 to do it faster and easier you could do (2x5) + (3x3) + (2x4) = 27, this is easier and quicker because instead of using many numbers it would be slower and harder to add them up.

Then we did the averages, to get the averages you add the numbers together and then divide and get the total for example, 2,3,3,5,7, and 10 is 30 divided by 6, is 5.

Multiplication is easy to add up data and addition can sometimes be hard.

Reading Tasks | Reading

This week for reading I did table mat, making connections, synthesis using a book called "White Water Action"

First I did the table mat I did the prior knowledge and then found 3 key words and then explained what 1 of the key words meant, then I found 4 facts from the book. After that I did key questions and lastly I wrote in the questions I would ask.

Secondly I did my making connections, there are 3 different types of text they are, text to self, text to text, text to world. Text to self is something in the book that has happend to yourself, text to text is something that happend in the book that relates to another book, and text to world is something in the book that happens in the world.

Lastly I did synthesis, for synthesis you talk about prior knowledge, new information, and new understanding. we have copied and pasted my prior knowledge from the table mat and for the new information we have to also copy and paste our facts, for the new understandings we make our own and write in why I understand it.

Volcanoes Names

Today I did a activity about the Auckland volcanoes.

The first thing I did was translate the volcanoes using the Maori dictionary for example, Maungawhau is Mt Eden, Rarotonga is Mt Smart, Maungarei is Mt Wellington etc.

The second thing I did was go down to the mat with Fire Odie we used cards with words in Maori and English at the bottom. We practiced them and passed them around.

I enjoyed this activity because it was fun to translate the Auckland volcanoes.

Screen Play | Writing

Screenplays are the only the parts of a story that are speech.

Screenplays have the scene names, names of the person speaking, what they are saying, and how the person should be speaking. Sometimes screenplays give short sentences that tell what the actors should do.

The scene name tells what the scene will be about. By writing the name of the person it shows who will be speaking, but the person's name is written in all capitals.

This we interesting to find out how screenplays work.

LI: to convert a story into a screenplay/script.

Sharing Knowledge | Maths

This week for maths I learnt maths with other people from week 1 that did measuring and did the same with week 2.

I got a partner first we explained each others DLO. What I learnt from my partner is that measuring uses mm, cm, tones, km etc, my partner also told me that measuring sometimes uses converting. mm is short for milometers, cm is short for centimetres km is short for kilometres.

My partner explained what each one meant and explained how measuring can use converting. measuring uses converting by multiplying the old measuring meant by one.

With my other partner I learnt about fact family. Fact is a group of maths that using the same numbers. Fact family uses addition subtraction, you use three numbers to get four facts.

Fact families uses many equations, fact families also shows relationships between three numbers involved. A set of three uses multiplication and division.

I really enjoyed this learning. I think that I thought my partners taught me well.  I think I also taught well.

Design Shelter

This week our group has designed an emergency shelter that will protect against natural disasters.

First we looked at different shelters and the shape of the shelter. We had to figure out if it was a good or a bad shelter in different conditions.
Next we thought of a shape for our shelter which was a pyramid, and a cube. The reason why we chose these shapes was because if the wind was coming into the corner the wind would split into different directions. If the wind blows to a direction to the wall it will slide up that might make a vacuum.
Then we created a shelter using the app Sketch up.
The materials that might be used to create our shelter were bricks, and stones. Bricks and stones are different types of bricks that are both heavy materials that can not be pushed by strong wind.
If we changed things of  the shelter it would be adding windows on each side so we know what's happening outside.
During this activity we found thinking of the shape hard but we found this fun because we were able to create a shelter.

Formal and Informal

Formality tells people when to use formal or informal language at the right time.

Formal is when you have to follow the rules and respect people like when someone special comes to the school you have to be nice.

Informal is when you don't need to follow any rules and don't need to be respectful like when your  friends come over.

Formal and informal are the opposite of each other.

Daily Routine

For writing I wrote a recount. I chose to do my Tuesday daily recount.

First I listed the things that I do on a Tuesday. There were four events that I listed about before school, at school, after school, and after dinner. After I did that did my recount.

I wrote about what I do before school like showering , waking up eating breakfast etc. Then I wrote on What I did at school. Like Doing work eating lunch etc.

After that I wrote about what did after school. Like Showering, changing etc. Then I wrote on what I did after dinner. Like playing with my siblings. watching videos etc.

L.I. Write a recount of your day.

Rounding

Rounding is a math strategy that uses addition & division strategies. Rounding means making a number easier but keeping its value close to what it was. The answer is less detailed, but easier to use

Addition and division are both operations that are used for rounding. To round, the person needs to find the mean, to find the mean get a set of numbers like 5,7,1,9,3 and then add them altogether which would make 25. Then divide them by the amount of numbers there are which makes 5.

Rounding can help people get better at adding and dividing. Also at understanding how to round numbers in to 1 decimal place.

L.I. Investigate units of time

Safety plan

This week me and my group did a safety plan with fire and food.

First we chose a spot then we picked the class level the class level is what year the students are. Then we wrote down how many helpers there would be. If there are 30 students there would be 3 helpers.

Then we wrote down the hazards and risks. We did 4 hazards and risks. After we wrote down the consequences. We also did 4 consequences. Then we wrote on how we could prevent them. After we wrote on who's responsibility it was. Lastly we did the emergence plan.

This activity was enjoyable because I learnt more fire safety.

Governing Topics

Governing topics are actions that political parties want to put into action when they get into power. The 2 most important things about the Governing topics to me are Health and Education.

Health is keeping people healthy and helping them feel to maintain personal hygiene.

Education means the government is spending money recklessly on schools so people learn new things.

Health is important to me because I can stay healthy and not get sick. Education is also important because it helps me learn new things to understand more.

L.I. To choose important governing topics by summarising all topics.

Risk Assessment

Today my group did a risk assessment form template.

First we wrote in the activity that we chose. Then we did the class level. class level means what year you are.
Then we did the numbers of helpers the numbers of helper is on how many student there are so if there 20 student there will be 2 helpers.

Then we picked the location that we would do. We chose to do Panmure Bright School Fields.
After that we did on what could happend/Consequence.

We did 4 boxes of consequences. Then we Hazards and risks and did 4 boxes for each as well.
Then we wrote on how e could prevent it. After that we wrote down who's responsibility it would be.
After that we did the emergency plan for each one.

I enjoyed doing this task and I learnt how to be safe when going on trips.

L.I. To assess risk with in a  simple activity

Fox - Gorilla | Gruffalo

Rewriting means replacing somethings in a story to see how different the story would be like.

The questions in the story give ideas to help change things and rewrite the story.

The fox was changed to a gorilla because the story would have big change and it would have been interesting. Also because they kinda have the same personality.

Rewriting a story can help have more creativity and be enjoyable.

L.I. To re write a narrative

Gruffalo | Making Connections

The 3 connections are text to self, text to text, and text to world.

Text to self means making a connection on something similar that happend in the book and has happend to you.
Example- The mouse scared predators by describing something. Connection- when someone scared me by describing something.

Text to text means something that also happend in a another story.
Example- the fox tried to convince the mouse to have lunch- connection- The fox in the three little pigs tired to convince them to let him  in there houses.

Text to world means making a connection in the story that happend in real life.
Example- The mouse  though he lied to predators. Connection- people also lie.

Gruffalo | Setting Description

A setting is the environment in a story. It can include what it smells, sounds, feels, and looks like

When describing what a pace looks like, it needs to include adjectives such as dirty, Clean, Fresh etc.

When describing what a place sounds like, it also needs to include adjectives like quiet, loud, and etc.

To describe what a place smells like it needs to include adjectives as rotten, clean, and etc.

To describe what a place feels like it needs to include adjectives as rough, bumpy, uneven, etc.

This strategy can help people get picture inside the readers head as they connect with the four senses.

Assess Likelihood

We learnt about assessing likelihood. The 5 potential risks are: low, likely, possible, elevated, and extreme.

First we rated the situations from 1 to 5 risk of the risk. As a group we discussed what level we thought fit the situation.

Next we wrote down multiple consequences on what would have happened.

After that we made our own situations that are related to that risk level.

We enjoyed this task and it was also hard to make our own situations.

The Gruffalo

This week I did fact and opinion as well as character trait.

For fact and opinion I found facts about each animals in the story the gruffalo and make my own opinion on what I though the animals would act like and there were four boxes for each one.

After that I did the character trait. The character trait was about inferring about the characters and on how they act.

I enjoyed learning about the different characters and how they acted.
